The Garage Door Is Part of the Photo: A Prom Send-Off Checklist for Central Michigan Families

Prom season has a way of sneaking up on you.

One day you're agreeing to help pin a boutonniere, and the next you're standing in the driveway with your phone out, trying to get a shot before the limo arrives and the moment is gone. It's one of those nights that feels big — because it is — and the last thing on your mind is your garage door.

But here's the thing: your garage door is probably going to be in half those photos.

The Garage Door Gets More Attention Than You Think

For most Central Michigan homes, the driveway is the send-off stage. It's where families gather, where grandparents park, where the group photos happen before everyone piles in and disappears for the night.

And right there in the background — or sometimes front and center — is your garage door.

Nobody's saying it has to look like a magazine spread. But a door with peeling paint, a dented panel, or an awkward gap at the bottom has a way of showing up in photos more than you'd expect. And if it decides to act up right when you need it — stuck halfway, grinding loudly, refusing to close after everyone leaves — that's a memory of a different kind.

A Few Things Worth Checking Before the Big Night

You don't need to overhaul anything. Just a quick look-over a few days before prom can save you a headache on the night itself.

Does it open and close smoothly? Run it through a couple of cycles. Listen for anything that sounds off — grinding, squealing, or a hesitation mid-travel. These are usually minor issues that get worse with time, not better.

Does it close all the way? A door that doesn't fully close is a security issue any night, but especially one where you might be distracted or running late. Check that the bottom seal is making full contact with the ground.

Any obvious cosmetic issues? A fresh eye goes a long way here. Step back and look at the door like a guest would seeing it for the first time. Scuffs, dents, and faded paint are easy to overlook when you see it every day.

Is the area in front of it clear? This sounds obvious, but prom nights involve more cars in and out of your driveway than usual. Make sure there's nothing blocking the sensor path, and that the auto-reverse is working properly — especially if younger kids or pets are going to be around during the chaos.

Do the exterior lights still work? Photos taken at dusk or early evening look so much better with good lighting. If the light fixture near your garage door has a dead bulb, now's an easy time to swap it out.

It's Not Just About the Photos

There's a quieter reason to give your garage door a once-over before a night like this.

Prom nights run late. You'll probably be waiting up. And when your kid finally pulls back in at 1am, the last thing you want is a door that won't open, a sensor acting up, or an opener that's been making that noise you've been putting off dealing with.

The garage door is easy to ignore right up until the moment it becomes the whole problem.

Central Michigan Prom Dates Are Coming Up Fast

Schools across Isabella, Gratiot, Clare, and Mecosta counties are heading into prom season over the next few weeks. If your door has been on your mental to-do list, this is as good a reason as any to finally check it off.

A quick tune-up or safety inspection doesn't take long and costs less than you'd probably expect — and it means one less thing to think about on a night that's already got plenty of moving parts.
